A Fronton is a two walled or single walled court used as playing area for Basque pelota or Jai Alai.

The Daytona Beach Fronton was built in 1959. In 1974, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Jai Alai fronton burned to the ground and a $4-million insurance payment was paid out. The report to the Birmingham Racing Commission said that in 1980, Gary Bowdach, a federal prosecution witness, said the fire was ordered by Salvatore Cufari, a reputed crime boss in Springfield, Mass.
I am not sure where the fronton was, exactly. The postcard only says Route 92 and show the fronton near the water.
at one time the fronton in daytona beach was just west of the speedway on international speedway blvd, and it must have been rebuilt or the info that you have on when it burned is incorrect because i went to school with a girl who's father was a Jai alai player in daytona beach and that was back in 1985
ReplyDeleteOn April 10, 1974 at 01:45am it burned to the ground less than two hours after the last game ended. It was rebuilt. I was there in 1978.
